I agree with Peter Hyland.

The Unity of Time obviously looked particularly stupid to Shakespeare.
In the Tempest, which obeys the unity perfectly, there is a lot of play
with its absurdities, and with image and word-clusters around the idea
of time, tempus, etc. (q.v. the title!).

I don't know that I'd go so far as to say the audience would "surely"
see the joke.  My audiences are sharp, but that may be expecting a bit
much from them.
