The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 14.0676 Monday, 7 April 2003 From: Jean-Christophe Mayer <Jean-Christophe.Mayer@univ-montp3.fr> Date: Monday, 7 Apr 2003 11:42:46 +0200 Subject: 400th Anniversary of Elizabeth I's Death Dear SHAKSPERians, We hope that this (non-profit) academic publication might be of interest to you: Jean-Christophe Mayer, ed., Breaking the Silence on the Succession, A Sourcebook of Manuscripts & Rare Elizabethan Texts (c. 1587-1603), Astraea Texts Collection, Montpellier: Publications de la Recherche, 2003, xiv + 336 pp. (with index et 7 colour plates), ISBN 2-84269-566-6, Price: 15 Euros. With contributions from: Luc Borot, Bernard Bourdin, Sandra Jusdado, Catherine Lisak, J-C. Mayer, Nick Myers. SYNOPSIS: The last decade of Elizabeth I's reign is still perceived as a settled era, with Gloriana reigning in unrivalled fin-de-siecle splendour and Elizabethan culture blossoming while the country as a whole patiently awaited James VI's uncontested accession to the throne. This view-as the texts selected for this sourcebook amply demonstrate-is largely a misconception. The eleven texts which form this sourcebook are especially challenging and enriching in the contrasting views they offer of the period. All of them are rare texts. Indeed, priority has been given to manuscript tracts which had never hitherto been published and which had often been unjustly overlooked by historians. There are also extracts of three printed works by Peter Wentworth, "N. Doleman", and John Harington-three authors without whom it is difficult (if not impossible) to understand the main political and religious tensions of the period. A particular effort has been made to present a selection of works which reflects a multiplicity of perspectives: protestant, puritan, catholic, appellant, English, Scottish or Continental. The whole is designed to give the reader who may not have direct access to manuscript and rare books collections a fresh insight into the political culture of late Elizabethan England.
