SHAKSPER 2003: "Historical Portraits"
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 02/28/03
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 14.0411 Friday, 28 February 2003 From: Hardy M. Cook <editor@shaksper.net> Date: Friday, February 28, 2003 Subject: "Historical Portraits" Dear SHAKSPEReans, Fifteen or so years ago, I was given a book of portraits of historical figures (primarily English and Scottish) from the time of Henry VII through that of James II. Georgianna Ziegler has identified the book as "Historical Portraits" by Adriaan van der Werff (1659-1722). There are 66 engravings executed by several hands after paintings by A. van der Werff. I have a German imprint of the book and have decided that at some point I am going to donate it to the Folger Shakespeare Library, but after sitting in a protective envelope for all these years I now want to explore it in more depth. The portraits include the familiar (Henry VII, Elizabeth of York, Henry VIII and six wives, Wolsey, More, Cranmer, John Fisher, Thomas Cromwell, Edward VI, Edward Seymour, Thomas Howard, Lady Jane Grey, Mary I, Phillip II, Ridley, Latimer, Gardiner, Pole, Elizabeth I, Dudley, Alencon, Essex, Walsingham, Mary Stuart, James I, Villiers, Charles I, Laud, Oliver Cromwell, Monk, and Charles II) and the less familiar (Peter Martyr, Martin Bucer). Yesterday, I organized head shots that I made from digital images I had taken chronology into a PowerPoint presentation of Tudor/Stuart historical figures. There were, however, some portraits of people I was not able to identify with the references I have at home and online, and my younger daughter is home from school again today after yet another East coast snow storm. If anyone knows who any of the following are, I would appreciate your privately sending me a brief note: Lesley Eveque de Rosse Ferdinand of Toledo (Ferdinand de Tolede, Duc d'Albe) Alessandro Franese, Duke of Parma Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange Elizabeth, Queen of Bohemia Frederick of Bohemia I am also interested in William I (Prince of Orange) and Frederick I (King of Prussia) because I am not as clear as I could be on their relationships to the British rulers of their times.
