The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 14.0190 Tuesday, 4 February 2003 From: Richard Burt <burt@english.umass.edu> Date: Monday, 03 Feb 2003 17:09:58 -0500 Subject: DOD Gives GIs Copies of H5 Among the books being given by the Defense Department to soldiers is Shakespeare's "Henry V," in which the king leads his nation into a dangerous, unnecessary and unjustified war. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/01/26/books/review/26SHULEVT.html?tntemail0 The New York Times January 26, 2003 The Original Band of Brothers By JUDITH SHULEVITZ The director of a literary nonprofit organization, who along with Joseph Brodsky used to try to persuade motel clerks to slip volumes of poetry into dressing tables next to the Bibles, finds private funding to revive a World War II-era military giveaway of great books. The Defense Department distributes 100,000 free copies of Sun Tzu's "Art of War," Shakespeare's "Henry V," a collection of military profiles and another one of soldiers' letters. The books are printed in elongated cargo-pocket-sized editions specially pre-aged to look like the old Armed Services Editions and are handed out during the Christmas season in the lobby of the Pentagon, on missile-carrying frigates, in Bosnia. Soldiers are thrilled, and write e-mail messages to reporters in praise of the program.
