From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 02/04/03
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 14.0188 Tuesday, 4 February 2003 From: Bill Arnold <barnold_pb@yahoo.com> Date: Monday, 3 Feb 2003 06:48:46 -0800 (PST) Subject: 14.0177 Re: Claudius' Incestuous Marriage Comment: Re: SHK 14.0177 Re: Claudius' Incestuous Marriage David Friedberg writes, "Bill Arnold sends a blast a of bitter black bile from Palm Beach across Florida to Sarasota [sic]" How poetic of you, Sir! Then he writes, "The correct usage of [sic] in square brackets is nicely set forth in texts such the Oxford Companion to the English Language, which I recommend you read. Such phrase are inapplicable to the words of mine you posted [sic]" Sir, I chose to correctly quote you with your improper usage: a lack of periods. The he also writes, "I also recommend that you read my original post once more. My remarks were about the charge of incest [sic] I made no comment on whether Claudius had contravened any other law or commandment [sic] Excuse me, Sir. But my remarks were in reference to the quote I quoted from you, re: the word "dishonor," which IS another of the verses from Exodus, C 20, V 12. I had taken you seriously when you were calling your own remarks "light-hearted" and I had thought you were punning upon the prohibition against dishonoring one's parents, and converting it into brother vs. brother. Then he writes, "I challenge you Bill Arnold to look up incest in a dictionary and reconsider your intemperate comments." No intemperance was intended: Intemperance is in the eye of the beholder! The he writes, "Please reply about Claudius and incest, or hold your tongue." Nay, Sir, I SHALT not. My remarks were about Will Shakespeare's play Hamlet and what I read as your misreading and wrongful exegesis thereof.
