In the current (fall) number of ANQ I have two essays which explore
several aspects of the texts and performances of several plays. First,
in DREAM, recognition of its two marriage performances on May Day 1594
and on Valentine's Day 1596 clears up several textual inconsistencies
including the fact that the accepted text prints four different endings
required for different occasions. Also I show that the original version
is that of the Folio, not that of the generally accepted Quarto. This
evidence accords with an actor, John Heminge doubling the parts of Egeus
and Puck. His editorial work is visible in the Folio stage directions
of scenes in which he participated. This leads to the thesis that he
and Henry Condell also actively edited stage directions of TITUS, MUCH
ADO, and possibly both parts of HENRY IV. I do not believe that these
ideas have been addressed previously, and I welcome any comments or
reactions to them.
