SHAKSPER 2003: Re: Shakespeare's Accessibility
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 01/14/03
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 14.067 Tuesday, 14 January 2003 From: Takashi Kozuka <resuscitation@yahoo.co.uk> Date: Tuesday, 14 Jan 2003 10:36:23 +0000 (GMT) Subject: Re: Shakespeare's Accessibility Speaking of Asian productions, the Globe Tokyo (which has pink external walls) was closed at the end of July and sold by 10 October to an entertainment company which has been interested (at least in the past) only in celebrities, especially good-looking singers who can't sing (on TV they just dance and move their lips to their own CD). Although the name of the theatre will remain the same, it will be used for popular entertainments starring the entertainment company's own celebrities as well as Shakespearean productions. If you can't really grasp this big change taking place at the Globe Tokyo, you could imagine, I assume, Backstreet Boys or S Club Jr "performing" on the stage of the Globe in London. I wonder why the acclaimed theatre in Tokyo got into the red. Was it because Shakespeare was/is no longer so popular as we may have assumed? Was it the power of showbiz? Was it a reflection of Japan's economy? Should I read Bristol's Big-time Shakespeare again? Best wishes, Takashi Kozuka _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
