The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 13.2473 Monday, 30 December 2002 From: Eric Cohen <Eric@Funderstanding.com> Date: Monday, 23 Dec 2002 23:38:38 -0500 Subject: Comparison of Henry V Films Greetings, In trying to increase my limited knowledge of the Bard, I stumbled upon a book called "Shakespeare: The Basics" by Sean McEvoy. On page 114 he mentions that it is interesting to compare Olivier's Henry V to Branagh's Henry V. I've watched these movies back to back and also find the comparison interesting. McEvoy refers to a book by Holderness, "Shakespeare Recycled" which contains what I suspect is a scholarly comparison. Having seen each movie several times I am certainly aware of the obvious differences. Eg, the differences in moods and temperaments of Henry V, the patriotism of Olivier's vs. the grit of Branagh's, scenes left in or out, etc. I am curious to know more about the Holderness discussion as I suspect he identifies some more subtle differences than what I have noticed. My library system does not have the book. I was just wondering if anyone was familiar with the book that might be willing to relay some of the thoughts contained in the book. I want to know what I am missing! All thoughts and opinions are most welcome!
