SHAKSPER 2002: SHAXICAN and Colley Cibber
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 12/30/02
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 13.2470 Monday, 30 December 2002 From: Matthew Steggle <M.Steggle@shu.ac.uk> Date: Friday, 27 Dec 2002 13:32:20 +0000 Subject: SHAXICAN and Colley Cibber This note is to announce a new addition to the SHAXICAN website. Members of this list may well already be aware of SHAXICAN, an initiative started by Gabriel Egan which uses perl scripts to facilitate examination of Shakespeare's vocabulary patterns. Steve Roth and I have taken as our starting-point Don Foster's assertion that Shakespeare's acting career can be deduced from the patterns of rare words in his plays, and using SHAXICAN we have tested the principles on the much better-documented career and works of Colley Cibber. A short account of our conclusions is written up as "Can We Tell from Lexical Analysis What Parts Shakespeare (or Anyone else) Played? Testing the Cibber Corpus", online at http://www.totus.org/SHAXICAN/ for anyone who might be interested.
