The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 13.2469 Monday, 30 December 2002 From: Meg Powers Livingston <mpl10@psu.edu> Date: Monday, 23 Dec 2002 19:37:48 -0500 Subject: 13.2433 Recordings of Shakespearian Actors Comment: Re: SHK 13.2433 Recordings of Shakespearian Actors As an adjunct to this discussion of old, rare recordings, I wanted to suggest to list members one way to keep some of these recordings from disappearing. Two years ago, my campus library decided to purge its collection of albums because the students were refusing to use them and because of the difficulty of keeping the library's one surviving record player in working condition. They were about the pitch the entire collection into the trash when someone decided to consult with the faculty first. I found a treasure trove of stuff, including Guthrie Theater performances and a number of early John Gielgud performances that are not available on tape (as far as I could find). I had a work study student record all the albums onto tape, and now my students (and I) are using these resources again. The moral, I suppose, is to check with your library and find out what has happened/is happening to these old materials as they are displaced by new media.
