The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 13.2462 Monday, 23 December 2002 From: Jadwiga Krupski <jkrupski@tcn.net> Date: Saturday, 21 Dec 2002 12:15:03 -0500 Subject: New Book of Essays Some list members may be interested to hear of a recently published collection of essays, SPEAKING OF GRIEF IN ENGLISH LITERARY CULTURE - SHAKESPEARE TO MILTON (Duquesne UP, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), edited by Margo Swiss and David A. Kent) To quote from the book jacket: "In the aftermath of deconstructive analyses of literature, there has been a discernible turn toward rediscovering the emotional textures of literature." The essays by established and newer scholars seem to be bent on this quest. After an informative introduction by Margo Swiss, the first essay, by Fred B. Tomly is of interest to SHAKSPEReans. Entitled GRIEF, AUTHORITY AND THE RESISRANCE TO COSOLATION IN SHAKESPEARE, it expresses a strong critique of traditional consolatory modes expressed in condolences and other efforts to comfort the afflicted. Though one could have wished for a much more complete exploration of the theme in both MACBEHT and HAMLET, the point is argued with force and conviction - and is more successful in the approach to Edgar in KING LEAR. Any lover of PARADISE LOST will enjoy reading the final essay by Margo Swiss, entitled REPAIRING ANDROGYNY: EVE's TEARS IN PARADISE LOST. Altogether an interesting and challenging read! Merry Christmas to All, J.Krupski _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
