Also, is the oldest surviving >recording of Shakespeare the 1890 recording of Edwin Booth >reading "Othello", or are there older ones out there? I can't answer to the "oldest surviving" statistic, but you can hear Booth online. I did a web search for "Edwin Booth recording" and found it at: http://www.angelfire.com/art2/rosa719/booth.htm (beware the popup ads) Also, the original is at the Michigan State University's G. Robert Vincent Voice Library: http://www.lib.msu.edu/digital/vincent/ There are two recordings of Irving at: http://www.theirvingsociety.org.uk/ There's a snippet of Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and others, quite a few actually, to be found at Encyclopaedia Brittanica's "Shakespeare and the Globe" feature at: http://search.eb.com/shakespeare/ind_av.html This might not be directly helpful to you on a scholarly basis, but it might be interesting for other readers, and it's a free preview of sorts in case you need to track down the originals. --Ann Carrigan _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
