SHAKSPER 2002: Baz Luhrman Review
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@shaksper.net) Date: 12/10/02
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 13.2393 Tuesday, 10 December 2002 From: Nancy Charlton <n.charlton@attbi.com> Date: Monday, 09 Dec 2002 09:31:18 -0800 Subject: Baz Luhrman Review While this isn't strictly Shakespeare, I suspect I am not the only subscriber to this list who received with mixed feelings the news that Baz Luhrman is mounting a production of Puccini's "La Boheme." I had a chance to watch his R&J recently and I couldn't endure five minutes of it, and thus wondered what kind of a hash he'd make of Boheme. So I was surprised this morning to find that the NY Times has given it an unqualified rave. Well, if not exactly a rave, at least unqualified! >With the films "Strictly Ballroom," "Romeo and Juliet" and >"Moulin Rouge," Mr. Luhrmann and Ms. Martin brought an exultant, >defiantly stagey sense of theatricality to the cinema. With "La >Bohème" they have reversed the equation, bringing to the theater >a cinematic flow. La Boheme, the film, coming up next? Just as an aside, didn't the Prez do a dramaturgical job in his choice of new Sec'y of the Treasury. Who would better suited to overseeing the public treasure than one honest John who could Snow the people and even cover the Bush itself. But all concerned, especially those in the stock market, should watch that "in the dark/ How easy is a bush supposed a bear." _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
