Subject: Cutting JC

When I directed the play on the Univ. of Texas campus in 1971 we did the
whole play except for the requests Brutus makes to Clitus and then
Dardanius which precede the request to Volumnius. We cut C and D
because the audience is certain to laugh if Brutus is turned down by
three people before the fourth agrees to kill him. Excessively repeated
action is funny as in so many comedy shows on TV. or in Laurel and Hardy
films.

This was an experimental production designed to test an interpretation
of the design of the play. So we had good reason not to cut. Play is
2730 lines in Hinman TLN and ran just over three hours with a 20 min.
interval.

Cheers for texts,
JV
