I finally took a look at the supposed Southampton portrait (at
http://www.observer.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,6903,687960,00.html).  Am I
completely dim in believing this is a portrait of a lady and nobody
other than a lady? The owner thought it was an ancestor, Lady Norton,
but a National Trust art historian, after doubting it for several years,
suddenly sees the ghost of WH behind the pink cheeks!

I think it's a new Tudor ghost to haunt a lesser-known National Trust
site, Hatchlands Park, Guildford
(http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/scripts/nthandbook.dll?ACTION=PROPERTY&PROP
ERTYID=240).

A bit of a side-issue, but..

In the April issue of the Atlantic Monthly, there is a long and
interesting article about cross-dressers, which shows quite clearly that
the usual idea that cross-dressing is always camp and always denotes
homosexuality is quite wrong.
