SHAKSPER 2001: End of the Year and Best Wishes for the New Year
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@ws.bowiestate.edu) Date: 12/31/01
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 12.2924 Monday, 31 December 2001 From: Hardy M. Cook <hcook@bowiestate.edu> Date: Monday, December 31, 2001 Subject: End of the Year and Best Wishes for the New Year Dear SHAKSPEReans, This will be the last digest from SHAKSPER for 2001. This has been a very good year for this academic listserv. First, we have finally established the SHAKSPER web site, which is highly successful and which continues to receive a truly remarkable number of “hits” a day. Second, we have once again exceeded the number of posts for the previous year, establishing yet another record. Although SHAKSPER was founded in June of 1990 by Kenneth Steele, volume numbers begin with each new year, so your first digest of 2002 will be 13.0001. I plan to take a few more days of rest, so do not expect any messages tomorrow or Wednesday either. On a personal note, 2001 has not been the greatest year in my life. For the past six years, I have served as chair of my department. During those years, my scholarship has suffered even though I have managed to continue with very few hitches my work with SHAKSPER. I have resigned as chair effective July 1, 2002, and I have applied for a sabbatical for next academic year in large part to catch up with some of the scholarship I have neglected and to continue, of course, to deliver SHAKSPER to its loyal members. However, granted a sabbatical or not, I have serious doubts I shall be able to continue in my current position. For this and other reasons, I shall very shortly, I hope, be moving the SHAKSPER server from my office to my home, where I have commercial DSL service. What then follows for me to paraphrase Henslowe from *Shakespeare in Love* “is a mystery.” I am sure that in the year to come the discussions on SHAKSPER will continue to be engaging and lively. In the spirit of the season, I wish you all my best wishes for 2002. I also humbly thank you all for making SHAKSPER the joy it is for me to bring to you.
