Markus Marti facetiously (I hope) raises something I have wondered about
from time to time.  Shakespeare names two dogs, as best I recall, in his
plays.  Crab and Troilus.  By today’s standards, these are unusual names
for pets.

Were they unusual in early modern England?  Perhaps list members will be
kind enough to write with the names of pets from this era that they
know about?  Please make clear if the name is for a real or fictitious
pet.

Alternatively, if anyone knows of an article or chapter in a book on
this, I'd be grateful for the reference.

I agree! It is some ignoramus who has a vague idea that there are
characters called Hamlet and Ophelia in the play, there’s a brother and
sister in there somewhere, ergo...
