“To know evil, its origins and its logic is a dark and terrifying path
to take for any writer, but to do the job properly is quite necessary”,
writes Sam Small portentously. “The writer must become that awful
character to know fully the world in which he resides.  The writer must
know the “evil one” as well as all the laudatory motives of the
protagonist”.

Of course, for the non-pathological among the writerly fraternity, there
is always the option of imagining. As Olivier said to Hoffman, “Dear
boy, haven’t you heard of acting?”
