The *Hermia* topic has moved far from my initial questions, bless it.  I
had a pretty fair idea of WHAT, and after reading your comments have an
even better idea if it.  My questions were all about WHY, and no one has
even attempted to address those.  Well, I feared the answers may be lost
to time, or simply not addressed in past scholarship.

Perhaps they were bad questions.  They don’t seem so to me, but then
they are my questions, aren’t they?  I’m hardly objective.

Thanks to all who did expound on WHAT, especially Peter Groves, but to
everyone else too.  I appreciate it.
