SHAKSPER 2001: Hermia
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@ws.bowiestate.edu) Date: 12/03/01
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 12.2723 Monday, 3 December 2001 From: Mike Jensen <jensensh@hotmail.com> Date: Sunday, 02 Dec 2001 18:17:38 -0800 Subject: Hermia I'm reading *MND* again, and engaging in my bad habit of counting things. I note that between 2.2.90-135, there are nine lines that I can't get to scan at 10 syllables using the usual tricks. Seven of these lines have the name Hermia, and they would scan at 10 if Hermia were pronounced as two syllables, possibly Herm-ya. Most telling is line 135 which scans at 12, and has the name twice. I can't be the first person to notice this. Is anyone out there aware of an article, or chapter, that addresses specifically the name Hermia, and the scansion of these lines?
