The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 12.2642 Wednesday, 21 November 2001 From: Mary Jane Miller <mjmiller@spartan.ac.brocku.ca> Date: Tuesday, 20 Nov 2001 13:19:29 -0500 Subject: 12.2623 Portrait Comment: Re: SHK 12.2623 Portrait The Art Gallery of Ontario which displayed it had a clever marketing device - posters, book marks etc presenting a composite ' portrait' of himself that is half of the portrait on display and half the Droeshut engraving (I think), split right down the middle. The AGO made no claims that what it displayed was a portrait of Shakespeare, only that it had been authenticated as a painting from that time - with a display explaining how it had been examined and another detailing the history of the 'accepted' portraits, some forgeries and the scholarship behind both kinds of image. The 'split' poster on my office door replaces one of Shakespeare in a hard hat, a poster for the New Globe before it opened. Makes it easy for new students to find me.
