SHAKSPER 2001: "most wonderful"--Twelfth Night
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@ws.bowiestate.edu) Date: 11/09/01
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 12.2576 Friday, 9 November 2001 From: Jessica Stevenson <jsteven7@is2.dal.ca> Date: Thursday, 8 Nov 2001 19:01:11 -0400 Subject: "most wonderful"--Twelfth Night When Twelfth Night's cast discovers that Sebastian is a twin (5.1.192) Antonio reacts with suspicion to the double appearance of his beloved (205-209) but Olivia exclaims only "most wonderful!" (210). What is expressed in Olivia's remark? Is it delight, and delight at what? Or is it more of confusion and consternation that Antonio seems to express? Although I've seen a couple of productions of Twelfth Night, it wasn't recently, and upon my last reading of the play I noticed that there are no other lines or directions for Antonio after his reaction to Sebastian's double appearance, although the scene goes on for another two hundred lines. How is this dealt with in productions of the play? Jessica Stevenson _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
