There are, however, many instances in which we unaccountably take characters at their word without the ocular proof. Hamlet's letter to Horatio, for example (I was just looking into the issue today). Why do we assume that Hamlet, having lied to everyone else in the play, would never lie to Horatio about the circumstances of his return to Denmark? Nevertheless, there would have to be some thematic justification for Edmund making such an error. Your students should support their reading with some reference to the play's themes.
