I distinctly remember seeing the Beatles do the Pyramus and Thisbe scene
on television. I wish I knew the name of the show or how to get it on
video. I don't remember when I saw it, but it must have been 1964 or
possibly 1965. It was definitely pre-Rubber Soul. (Unless an earlier
taping was rebroadcast in the US--then it could conceivably have been as
late as 1966.)
My memory (how reliable I'm not sure) has the four dressed up like the
playing card characters in Alice in Wonderland (or through the looking
glass?), but it may be that their outfits were just vaguely similar.
I'd love to see that rendition of the scene again. But my favorite
version was in a performance of MND at the Folger Shakespeare Library, I
believe in 1985.

The video of the Joseph Papp Shakespeare in the Park production (the one
starring William Hurt as Oberon) of Midsummer features a marvelous
Bottom (Jeffrey DeMunn) who, at some point during P&T, has a poignant
reaction when he sees Titania standing at a distance among the (real)
trees -- I believe it's at the "fairest dame" line. It's a lovely
moment, and as I recall, the whole P&T scene is well done, although the
production as a whole is slow-paced (and Hurt's birdlike interpretation
of Oberon is just plain odd). It's available on video, at their usual
exorbitant price, from Films for the Humanities.

Subject: Dream's P&T
The scene appears in a compilation tape of Beatles appearances in
newsreels and elsewhere. I don't recall the name of the show.
The scene is really good, quite in an Elizabethan mode I imagine. The
stage in the studio extends out into a screaming crown with shots of
high boxes where the dignitaries stand - perhaps Brian Epstein though
I'm not sure. The lads do a fine job with the scene.

Yes, Hardy, there was a Beatles' version of Pyramus and Thisbe; I saw it
too. My spouse went to Google search engine and typed in "thisby pyramus
beatles" and got 42 hits. Check it out.

A very very funny rendition of the P&T scene is in the Papp Shakespeare
in the Park MSND, the one with William Hurt as an awful Oberon.
Unfortuantely, my copy is a copy of the one held by our school
district--so I know it can be obtained "legally." Perhaps Tanya can help
with that.
Also, the RSC 1994 version is available on video, and perhaps DVD, as
well.

In 1975 I saw a film called "The Beatles LTD" that featured the Fab 4
doing the scene. I seem to remember John was Pyramus, Paul was Thisbe,
George was the wall and Ringo was, of course, the lion.
I distinctly remember Paul lying on the stage saying "Adeiu Adeiu Adeiu"
only I sounded like "I do I do I do" and the girls in the audience (they
were very close- it seemed to be performed on some sort of a catwalk)
screaming with teenage joy.
