No, Guthrie had just left the Vic. It was Michel St. Denis. The reason for the delay is that Olivier caught the flu, and his voice was weak. No doubt he'd have been healthy if they'd chosen another play, I write sarcastically. The opening was rescheduled to Friday 11/26, or 26/11, depending on where you live. Baylis died on the 25th, but the opening was not further rescheduled. Olivier was still not 100%, so actor John Laurie, an excellent Shakespearean of the era, stood by to take over if Olivier could not continue. He was not needed. Late in the run, 25 minutes of it was broadcast from the Old Vic by BBC television. Alas, it was not archived, but the photos of the TV cameras around the Old Vic stage make a very strange picture - stranger than you'd expect. Cheers, Old Vic Jensen _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
