SHAKSPER 2001: "barbarians" in Shakespeare
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@ws.bowiestate.edu) Date: 09/17/01
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 12.2190 Monday, 17 September 2001 From: Peter Donaldson <psdlit@MIT.EDU> Date: Sunday, 16 Sep 2001 12:03:02 -0400 Subject: "barbarians" in Shakespeare The Comparative Media Studies students at MIT are putting together a website on the coverage of the Twin Towers attack and its associated visual and verbal rhetoric. One part of this will be short introductions to the vocabularies employed, and I was asked to contribute something on "barbarians" in Shakespeare. Shakespeare's use of the term is not irrelevant to this purpose, but I suggested that a classicist (or Matthew Arnold scholar?) might provide a better expert introduction to the term and its later polemical use. However, as the site evolves, it would be useful to have links or bibliographical references to work on Shakespeare's construction of the "barbarian" as well, and I'd like to ask list members if they know of good material on this topic. _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
