SHAKSPER 2001: Greene/St. Augustine Query
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@ws.bowiestate.edu) Date: 07/13/01
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 12.1752 Friday, 13 July 2001 From: Will Sharpe <bullhill@hotmail.com> Date: Thursday, 12 Jul 2001 16:59:06 +0100 Subject: Greene/St. Augustine Query. Dear SHAKSPEReans, Robert Greene's 'Repentance' refers to "that Golden sentence of S.Augustine" in which "hee speaketh of the theefe hanging on the Croffe. There was (faith hee) one theefe faved and no more, therefore presume not; and there was one faved, and therefore despair not." Can anybody advise me where in Augustine's writings this 'golden sentence' appears? If so, further advice on a good edition (including page numbers) would be greatly appreciated - the body of Augustine's work seems to be a little too sizeable for a page by page search, so I think I need all the help I can get in narrowing the field! Yours hopefully (and thankfully), Will Sharpe. _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
