The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 12.1687 Tuesday, 3 July 2001 From: Andrew W. White <awhite@wam.umd.edu> Date: Monday, 2 Jul 2001 15:30:32 -0400 Subject: Spencer vs. Jonson Perhaps it could be something as simple as differences in style/education/attitude, coupled with a knowledge that exchanges of invective would be great for box office. At least, that's how I read Shakespeare's own satire of his neighbors across the street in _Hamlet_. I should think we're beyond the more literal interpretation of such in-print rivalries, and can appreciate the possibility that everyone knew each other, and prodded each other accordingly. To this end, a useful comparison might be the 'battle' between Gozzi and Goldoni in Venice; albeit of a later period, both knew full well that mutual hatred of each others' styles was great publicity and kept them both in a job.
