Subject: Spencer vs. Jonson

Does anyone have an idea what touched off the duel between Gabriel
Spencer and Ben Jonson in September 1598? It's been suggested to me: 1)
that going to jail together over the "Isle of Dogs" affair was the
opposite of a bonding experience for them, and 2) that Spencer, as a
shareholder of the Admiral's company (?) regarded Jonson as a Company
man, and resented his writing "Every Man in His Humour" for the Lord
Chamberlain's Men. Are there any other theories?

Janie
