From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@ws.bowiestate.edu) Date: 07/02/01
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 12.1663 Monday, 2 July 2001 From: Janie Cheaney <jbcheaney@alltel.net> Date: Friday, 29 Jun 2001 06:57:58 -0500 Subject: Spencer vs. Jonson Does anyone have an idea what touched off the duel between Gabriel Spencer and Ben Jonson in September 1598? It's been suggested to me: 1) that going to jail together over the "Isle of Dogs" affair was the opposite of a bonding experience for them, and 2) that Spencer, as a shareholder of the Admiral's company (?) regarded Jonson as a Company man, and resented his writing "Every Man in His Humour" for the Lord Chamberlain's Men. Are there any other theories? Janie _______________________________________________________________ S H A K S P E R: The Global Shakespeare Discussion List Hardy M.
