Subject:        War of the Theatres

For a review of recent work, and a statement of the current
battle-lines, try my book, Wars of the Theatres: The Poetics of
Personation in the Age of Jonson (Victoria, B.C.: English Literary
Studies, 1998).  Penniman argues that a lot of plays are implicated in
it, and more recent crit. has tended to be more cautious (see also R.A.
Small, The Stage-Quarrel... [1901]).
