Actually, the first time I thought of Wives in light of modern sitcoms was when I saw an RSC production directed by Bill Alexander about 15 years ago. The production was in the style of the 50s. As I recall, the letter scene was done in a beauty shop with Mistresses Ford and Page under the hair dryers. The reviews sounded strange to me, but it worked surprisingly well. Cute program too.
