SHAKSPER 2000: Roderigo in Performance
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@ws.bowiestate.edu) Date: 12/14/00
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 11.2325 Thursday, 14 December 2000 From: John Ford <jford@dsu.deltast.edu> Date: Wednesday, 13 Dec 2000 11:35:37 -0600 Subject: Roderigo in Performance I'm in the midst of a project on *Othello* in performance and would appreciate some help chasing down a lead. A colleague told me that he remembered hearing of a production (mid-nineties, probably American) in which Roderigo's sexual desire for Desdemona was presented in visual imagery that both linked and parodied Roderigo's inflated assessment of both his masculine and economic prowess. Specifically, in response to Iago's adivce, he appeared wearing two distended purses hanging from his belt, prepared to woo. If anyone remembers seeing or reading about such a production, could you let me know?-- either on or off-line. Thanks, John R. Ford
