SHAKSPER 2000: DVD Release of the BBC Shakespeare Series
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@ws.bowiestate.edu) Date: 12/07/00
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 11.2265 Thursday, 7 December 2000 From: Douglas M Lanier <doug.lanier@unh.edu> Date: Wednesday, 6 Dec 2000 15:44:10 -0500 (EST) Subject: DVD Release of the BBC Shakespeare Series I notice on the Ambrose Video website (www.Ambrosevideo.com) that they are planning to release a DVD version of the BBC series starting in December 2000. They advertise the series as being remastered: "We have taken as much care as possible to restore the masters (which are over 20 years old) for the best DVD viewing experience possible." For those who are willing to pre-order the entire series, there's a discount. I don't recall there being discussion of this re-release on SHAKSPER (though I could be wrong about that). So I thought I'd ask: i) does anyone know anything about this DVD re-release, particularly about the quality of the video transfer or the existence of any extra materials on the DVDs? (This is not a question about the BBC series per se, but rather about this particular re-release.) ii) how might this affect efforts to get the BBC to release some or all of the videos at a lower price? (I notice that the ad also states "Ambrose Video is to be the exclusive distributor of Shakespeare's plays which are so richly rewarding to our viewers.") Thanks, Douglas Lanier Doug.Lanier@unh.edu
