Subject:        "Alarbes"

Can anyone identify the Alarbes, a people referred to in the following
passage from Puttenham's *Art of English Poesy* (1589)?

=====

One praising the Neapolitans for good men at arms, said . . . thus:

A proud people and wise and valiant,
Fiercely fighting with horses and with barbs:
By whose prowess the Roman Prince did daunt,
Wild Africans and the lawless Alarbes:
The Nubians marching with their armed carts,
And slaying afar with venom and with darts.

=====

Many thanks,
Frank Whigham
