From: Stuart Lee <stuart.lee@computing-services.oxford.ac.uk> Date: Friday, 16 Jun 2000 15:48:11 +0100 (BST) Subject: 'E-lit' Colloquium (Oxford): Teaching English Lit. with Computers 'E-LIT: Teaching English Literature with Computers' A one-day colloquium hosted by the CTI Centre for Textual Studies 28th June Oxford University As you may already know, the CTI Centre for Textual Studies (http://info.ox.ac.uk/ctitext/) finally closes at the end of June, before handing over to the LTSN English Centre. However, we are planning one final event, to be held on Wednesday 28th June in the Oxford University Computing Laboratory. This will take the form of a whole-day conference looking at the use of computers in the teaching of English literature, including methodologies, insights into particular projects and new initiatives, and an exploration of how effective the IT side has been in the teaching process. The programme for the day will include: * Keynote address by Robert Clark, University of East Anglia: 'Mewling and Puking: First Steps towards the Literary Internet' Dr Clark is a Senior Lecturer in English Literature; Editorial Director of the Annotated Bibliography of English Studies; founding member of both the Council for University English and the European Society for the Study of English; and Chairman of the Humanities Hub Advisory Committee. Mr Watt is a Senior Lecturer concentrating on Renaissance literature, and poetry from the late Victorian period to the present. He is also the creator of The Web Concordances (http://www.dundee.ac.uk/english/wics/wics.htm) * Sue Thomas, Artistic Director of the trAce On-line Writing Community, project at Nottingham Trent University (http://trace.ntu.ac.uk). * Paul Cavill, University of Nottingham. Lecturer in Medieval English; co-editor of 'Caedmon's Hymn' (a Hypertext Programme for Beginner's in Old English). * Harry Dodds, Head of English, Gosford Hill School, Kidlington. Mr Dodds will cover the use of C&IT in teaching English at GCSE and A Level, i.e. how prepared new undergraduates will be for using computers at HE level. * Stuart Lee, Head of the Centre for Humanities Computing at Oxford University. Project Manager for the Virtual Seminars for Teaching Literature project (http://info.ox.ac.uk/jtap/) and an on-line edition of three Old English homilies (http://users.ox.ac.uk/~stuart/kings/). Registration for the event will cost only 25.00 GBP (10.00 for students), to include refreshments and lunch.
