SHAKSPER 2000: Nunn's Twelfth Night
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@ws.bowiestate.edu) Date: 03/13/00
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 11.0494 Monday, 13 March 2000. From: Susan Neill <skyclutz@yahoo.com> Date: Sunday, 12 Mar 2000 07:15:21 -0800 (PST) Subject: Nunn's Twelfth Night Though I'm late to the discussion as well (new member), I have to respond to Yvonne's critiqes of the Lincoln Center TN and Nunn's movie. In my opinion, Nunn's version was far superior. I can't imagine a better Feste (B. Kingsley), Sir Toby (Mel Smith) or Malvolio (Nigel Hawthorne!!). And I think Bonham-Carter's performance makes Sedgwyck's laughable. It's a matter of taste, but to me, the melancholy mood of the movie is perfect. The theme of the play IS a melancholy one - that live/love "'tis not here after..." And one shouldn't waste one's life obsessing over what one can't have/reclaim (unrequited love/youth). 2 more pluses to the movie: the beautiful Cornwall location and the music. I found the LC sets bland. Susan Neill
