Topical references to Kyd's characters (like Jonson's dig at "Jeronimo"
in the induction to Bartholomew Fair) suggest that playgoers-somebody,
at least-did indeed remember names of characters, probably especially
from more popular plays.  But then again, the tendency of Shakespeare
(and of the larger community of playwrights in which he was a part) to
re-use names  ("Antonio," "Claudio") suggests that any particular
resonance from play to play might be purely incidental.
