SHAKSPER 2000: Pound of Flesh
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@ws.bowiestate.edu) Date: 02/17/00
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 11.0342 Thursday, 17 February 2000. From: Lisa Schnell <lschnell@zoo.uvm.edu> Date: Wednesday, 16 Feb 2000 13:40:11 -0500 (EST) Subject: Pound of Flesh A colleague of mine, teaching _Merchant of Venice_, was recently asked by a student where the phrase "pound of flesh" came from. Neither she, nor I, nor the other Shakespearean in the department could summon its etiology other than to hazard that it perhaps came from Shakespeare's own imagination. Can anyone shed any light on this? Lisa Schnell University of Vermont
