SHAKSPER 1999: Musicians
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@ws.bowiestate.edu) Date: 12/20/99
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 10.2251 Monday, 20 December 1999. From: Perry Herzfeld <mhpa@ozemail.com.au> Date: Monday, 20 Dec 1999 21:50:51 +1100 Subject: Musicians I was watching the Burton/Taylor Taming of the Shrew the other day and a particularly beautiful piece of language caught my attention. Taylor refers to one of her tutors, who is trying to teach some musical instrument, a "fat fingered gut plucker". As a violinist myself this line struck me as absolutely marvelous: what a way to insult a musician! In fact, I have decided to put together a little list of Shakespeare's thoughts on musicians, be they positive or negative. Are there any appropriate Shakespearean quotes from the plays, sonnets, or whatever, that people know about that ought to be on this list? In anticipation of your assistance, Perry Herzfeld.
