My reason for suggesting that there was revision 'while Shakespeare was
writing the play' was that the loose ends, re-assignment of singing,
introduction of new character, etc (not to mention the confusion over
whether Orsino is a Duke or Count) occurs in Acts 1 and 2, rather than
throughout the play as might be expected for revision after completion.

David Lindley's suggestion that Robert Armin 'got on his high-horse' is
highly plausible, except that this is most likely to have happened when
he joined the company, and isn't that thought to be in 1600?  This would
push the composition of TN too early: perhaps Hotson was right after
all!

None of this explains how the Willow Song disappeared from the Othello Q
text, if it derives from Shakespeare's foul papers ...
