SHAKSPER 1999: Re: TN

The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 10.2234 Thursday, 16 December 1999. From: John Briggs <JWBRIGGS@dera.gov.uk> Date: Thursday, 16 Dec 1999 09:03:41 -0000 Subject: 10.2217 Various Regarding TN Comment: RE: SHK 10.2217 Various Regarding TN My reason for suggesting that there was revision 'while Shakespeare was writing the play' was that the loose ends, re-assignment of singing, introduction of new character, etc (not to mention the confusion over whether Orsino is a Duke or Count) occurs in Acts 1 and 2, rather than throughout the play as might be expected for revision after completion. David Lindley's suggestion that Robert Armin 'got on his high-horse' is highly plausible, except that this is most likely to have happened when he joined the company, and isn't that thought to be in 1600? This would push the composition of TN too early: perhaps Hotson was right after all! None of this explains how the Willow Song disappeared from the Othello Q text, if it derives from Shakespeare's foul papers ... John Briggs
