Abigail Quart's reduction to a 'glowy boneless puddle of well-being' by
this film is intriguing. My own response was less humid. Rupert
Everett's 'sensual, controlled passion' as Oberon struck me as
attributable largely to his carefully shaved arm-pits (twin emblems both
of sensuality and control). Much more fetching was the restoration of
the play's pivotal character, Mrs. Bottom. Indeed, it seemed to me that
the intellectual toughness beneath the slight lyric grace of her lines
had palpable puddling potential. I have always felt that this lady,
last seen in Hollywood, could tell us a great deal about Gertrude.
