The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 10.2026 Friday, 19 November 1999. From: Terence Hawkes <hawkest@compuserve.com> Date: Wednesday, 17 Nov 1999 13:04:27 -0500 Subject: Re: Age of Awareness Comment: SHK 10.2011 Re: Age of Awareness One of the Five Great Unanswered Questions about the Bard has always been "Why should anyone in their right mind want to introduce Shakespeare to the 'very young'?" Geralyn Horton, Playwright's proposal 'the greatest gift one can give a child is to expose the child to great poetry-and archaic forms-very early, while the brain is still learning language, and mastering usage. Then, sound patterns have not faded into background, but are enjoyed for their own sake, and unfamiliar words are not obstacles, but treasures to be caught up by guesswork and added to one's growing store.' effectively abandons meaning and offers mere 'sound patterns' as an acceptable substitute for it. Dangerous romantic nonsense. This is to reduce Shakespeare to the level of Dylan Thomas. Fie! Terence Hawkes
