SHAKSPER 1999: Re: Old Bill
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@ws.bowiestate.edu) Date: 10/04/99
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 10.1677 Monday, 4 October 1999. From: Terence Hawkes <hawkest@compuserve.com> Date: Monday, 4 Oct 1999 05:53:22 -0400 Subject: Old Bill My thanks to Moray McConnachie and Emma French: I did know about Shakespeare Road in Brixton. Dave Kathman and David Lindley, who warn against reading significance into such nomenclature, might reflect on the events of April 1981 in that part of London. They shed an ironic light on our own pieties concerning the Bard, as well as on those of the Victorians, sufficient to indicate that such naming signifies a great deal. I do not, of course, suggest that anything of the sort pertains in Chicago. T. Hawkes
