SHAKSPER 1999: Q: Flemish Farce
From: Hardy M. Cook (editor@ws.bowiestate.edu) Date: 03/11/99
The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 10.0437 Thursday, 11 March 1999. From: John Cox <cox@hope.edu> Date: Wednesday, 10 Mar 1999 11:18:36 -0500 Subject: Flemish Farce My question pertains not to Shakespeare but to a Flemish farce called "The Trick-Water Farce." It is identified as the play being performed in Pieter Brueghel the Younger's painting called "A Village Fete," dated 1632. The scene from the farce includes a devil disguised as a monk, seducing a woman whose jealous husband looks on, concealed in a coachman's hod. Is the farce extant? Does anyone know anything about it? Please reply off list. Thanks, John Cox
