Subject: Reading King Lear

Christopher Lehman-Haupt, the columnist for the New York Times, has an
informative essay about rediscovering King Lear through cassette tapes.
The column appears in the online NYT for March 3:

http://www.nytimes.com/library/books/030399notebook-lear.html

What makes the essay informative to a teacher of Shakespeare is that
Lehman-Haupt had a hard time understanding the play until he read it and
listened to it a second time. And this is a well-educated adult whose
profession is writing! The story sheds light on the difficulties our
students face when confronting Shakespeare for the first time.

Cheers,
John Cox
