From: Rick Jones <rjones@falcon.cc.ukans.edu> Date: Tuesday, 30 Jun 1998 09:43:21 -0500 (CDT) Subject: Advocacy Watch Please forgive cross-postings. ADVOCACY WATCH: A QUICK RESPONSE NETWORK A new nation-wide network is forming to generate quick responses to issues that place arts and theatre organizations in jeopardy. The Advocacy Committee of the national Association for Theatre in Higher Education has authorized the creation of an on-line response system, Advocacy Watch, to distribute fast-breaking information about situations which threaten the survival of the theatre and its sister arts in academe and in society in general. This is, then, a communications network for advocacy issues. The quick response time of internet communications will enable arts advocates to work both from the "bottom up," allowing individual members to call upon the organization's resources to address grassroots concerns (e.g. funding questions in San Antonio last fall) and from the "top down,' keeping members informed about national concerns (e.g. the NEA). Advocacy Watch co-chairs Rick Jones (University of Kansas) and Julia Matthews (Kennesaw State University, GA) are enlisting volunteers to staff a series of regional and state networks to feed into the larger national system. In the short term, we hope to have a 'point person' in every state; in the longer term, we're looking for someone in every congressional district. These volunteers will be well placed to coordinate local advocacy efforts and to lobby their government representatives. While this is a project of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, volunteers need not be members of the organization. . . although of course we would like them to be! What can you do to help Advocacy Watch grow? 1. Volunteer to be a regional and/or state "point person" on the on-line network. 2. Suggest other good people we might contact. 3. Give us input about local, regional, or national issues you'd like to see covered. To volunteer, or for more information, contact Rick Jones at rjones@falcon.cc.ukans.edu, by phone at 785-865-2989, or by FAX at 785-864-5251. Volunteers, please include your e-mail address, state, and congressional district (or congressperson's name). Many thanks!
