Subject:        Alex Jenning's Hamlet

Did anyone get to see the wonderful Hamlet at The Barbican? If so, I'd
be interested to know anyone's thoughts, especially as regards the
(perhaps) self-conscious centrality of the stage trapdoor. Perhaps this
is inevitable (I haven't seen Hamlet on the stage before), but the
opening scene had Hamlet pouring his father's ashes into the grating
over the trapdoor and this seemed to signal the production's very
self-conscious obsession with this grave-like opening. Or perhaps I'm
talking rubbish? Either way, it was a great production...
