In answer to Eric Armstrong, the meaning of stale which he prefers is
obviously the right one in the Comedy of Errors but the 'dupe or
laughing stock' meaning is required in at least two passages elsewhere
in the canon:

Had he none else to make a stale but me?
Then none but I shall turn his jest to sorrow.
(3H6, 3.3)

I'll trust, by leisure, him that mocks me once;
Thee never, nor thy traitorous haughty sons,
Confederates all thus to dishonour me.
