Subject: Cutting Scripts

I had always been under the impression that most of Shakespeare's plays were
accretions of variously rewritten scripts, and that any "complete" text was,
therefore, not a very good representation of any particular performance, and
that a director had not only a sanction but a mandate to cut the thing down to
around two hours. Is this just an unexamined prejudice?
