It was part of the New York 'Shakespeare in the Park' season some years ago. Strangely enough, I saw excerpts of the same production -- cut with interviews with both Streep and Julia -- used for a US Catholic Education Commission (or whatever it's called over there) religious education film. I don't remember any details about that as I'm afraid I was only relieving at the school in question! The original is available in some specialty video outlets, however. GALLAGHER <PGALLAGH@LIFE.JSC.NASA.GOV> Date: Tuesday, 17 Nov 1992 8:58:37 -0600 (CST) Subject: Re: SHREW variation There was a SHREW performed in Central Park at the NY Shakespeare Festival with Raul Julia and Meryl Streep several years ago. Those performances are frequently taped, and those tapes are usually available at the NYPL at Lincoln Center. I can't say for sure that it has been taped, but I think it is very likely. You might contact the NYPL to see if that tape is available, and where. I have heard there is a video tape of it but have not seen it. It was a New York Shakespeare Festival production at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, directed by Wilford Leach. The production was videotaped, and I have seen it, but I don't know where it can be obtained now. Both Streep and Julia were interviewed during the production, as they came off stage. The questions were directed to the way they felt about their characters as modern players performing parts in an apparently blatantly sexist play. A black-and-white photograph from the production is on the inside back cover of the Bantam Shakespeare edition of *Taming of the Shrew,* but it doesn't tell you much. That's where I got all the details of the production, though. Cheers, John Cox (5)---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Michael Friedman <FRIEDMANM1@JAGUAR.UOFS.EDU> Date: Tuesday, 17 Nov 1992 16:47:27 -0500 (EST) Subject: 3.0321 Another SHREW Variation (con't) Comment: Re: SHK 3.0321 Another SHREW Variation (con't) The "SHREW variation with Meryl Streep as Kate" referred to by Rasa Hollender is a PBS program called "Kiss Me, Petruchio," which intersperses clips from the Papp Central Park production of SHREW with interviews with Streep and her co-star, Raul Julia. It's a very funny and revealing look at the gender issues in the play, and it's just long enough to take up a 75 minute class period with room for discussion. I don't own a copy, but there is a version in the St. John's University English Department Video Collection in Collegeville, MN, where I taught for a year. I don't know if it is available for rent anywhere. Michael Friedman Friedman@Scranton
